Domain Name Registration

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) delegated to the National Academy of Sciences and Letters the Upper Control CR (Top-Level Domain TLD) for Costa Rica, for the coordination and administration of the controls in the hierarchy CR.

The administration of the TLD is governed under the norms of the IANA that they guarantee the absolute equity and transparency in the assignment of controls and directions IP.  These norms govern likewise the assignment of the controls under CR.

The sub-controls created under CR (controls of order 2) form the following generic categories:

  • AC           Academic Sector: higher Education and Investigation,

  • CO           Commercial Sector,

  • ED           General education, Secondary, Primary, and not Formal Education,

  • FI            Finance Sector,

  • GO           Government Sector,

  • OR           Organizations Not-Governmental and Voluntary Associations,

  • SA            Health Sector.

According to the RFC 920 is a requirement that each control have the less two servants of names (primary and secondary) without a common point of fault.  If its institution does not have endorsement, is recommendable that another institution or company maintains a secondary one for its control.

To activate its control the primary servant that will carry the Zone of Authority, to should be reachable by PING and DRAW since the servant root ns.cr.

Official Charges for Domain Names

As of March 1, 1996 the controls of order 3 (ej. xxx. co. cr, xxx. or. cr) will pay $50 per year. 

In agreement with the responsibility of supporting the Academic Sector, will not be collected for the controls under AC.CR and ED.CR.  The control GO.CR will be exempt of payment.  The control SA.CR will pay if it belongs to a private company, while if belongs to the government; it will be exempt of payment. 

These funds will be utilized exclusively for the maintenance of the NIC and actualization of equipment.

Aplication for domain name under the DNS “CR”.

The form to request a control under CR is comprised of two parts: the first one that refers to the administrative contact appointed by the Institution or Company for the management of the administrative matters of the control and the second to the technical contact responsible for the administration of the servant of names (DNS) that handles the zone of authority of the control requested.
