The Future of Private Power Generation in Costa Rica

At this point the future of Costa Rica's private power generation initiative is not very clear because in Costa Rica any attempt to privatize these services is a very passionate issue, in 2000 this initiative led to demonstrations by syndicates and other social sector parties, when the then government of Miguel Angel Rodriguez tried to pass through congress a very comprehensive modernization law of the Instituto Costaricense de Electricidad (ICE).

The modernization plan was archived for later review. No word on the situation of this plan or if the current Abel Pacheco government will try to revive it.
